I bought some cheese and cracker packs, some mini-pizzas, soup, pasta and ramen bowls, and a few other pleasantries. My thought behind it is that when we're working late, having something a little better than chips to eat would be a good idea. I cleaned out the fridge, and made sure that all FOUR of the jars of relish are easy to see, so that we don't buy any more. :) I ditched all of the leftovers, and moved what I could of the beer to the beer fridge.

Please remember to feed the Kitty if you get something from the fridge. There were 12 people there, 9 of which were current members. We all brought out the laptops and fired up Backtrack 3. Opfor lead the class, and showed us all how to use Kismet. From there, we went thru and figured out how to break WEP, but from the command line, not some Gui'd pre-built system. We broke for pizza, which Corydon went and picked up for us. Good times were had by all, and we shot the bull for a bit before taking the De-Ice Disc one challenge. We took a while getting started up, so some of the guys had to bail and get home to the missus and such. A few more of us stayed and played, eventually shutting the joint down. Good thing we all have keys!

It was a good time, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We'll try to have another one soon, and hopefully we can cool it off a bit more. Stay tuned to the next round!

As I sit here...

Here I am. Sipping bailey's and coffee. Well, I have no coffee in this cup. Go figure.

I asked a friend years ago about starting a company. I asked him what the best way to go about it was. He basically told me that the best way to go about it is to put together a good plan, then work out every aspect of the space, and how it will all function. When you go to the bank and ask for a loan, you have all of your ducks in a row, and they understand that you want it to work to the degree that you have worked out all of the details. Apparently, most people walk into the bank and ask for a loan for this cool idea that they have. They are summarily walked to the door with a smile and a handshake.

Anyone who knows me at all knows that I rarely do things halfway. If I commit to doing something, I am pretty adamant about doing it right and covering all of the bases. Well, this project is no different. In the beginning, it was a "wouldn't it be cool" kinda thing, and progressed into the "Hey, we could do this" kinda thing. It started as a 1,000 sq/ft space, with a bunch of workbenches shoehorned into it. We decided right after it was leased out from under us that we needed a different space. We then started this whole search for space. We got Paul to help out, and we toured a ton of spaces and finally found a 2,500 sq/ft space that could be used, but it had no office space per se. BaseSystems was interested in subleasing some of the space in exchange for some premium dollars, so we worked on getting them into the space. Seeblind and I sat down and laid out the entire space in the computer, and worked out as much of it as we could. Meetings, questions, etc. Finally, we went for a 4,000 sq/ft space, with plenty of office space and such that was built out, ready to go. This truly was the space to get into. Many nights, I have laid awake in bed going over the details, trying to figure out where everything would go. I've run the numbers under god knows how many sets of variables, and tried to make myself comfortable with it all. We've come quite a distance. From two guys talking about an idea to the brink of signing a lease. It's been right at two months since I started this blog, and alot has happened in that short a period of time.

So I'm sitting here, sipping bailey's, contemplating things. I am a week short of forming the corporation, signing the lease, and starting a venture that if it goes south, will put me in the worst shape I will ever have been in. I have asked several friends that are in business what would happen if the venture goes south and I can't get enough people on board to pay the bills. Essentially, if they can legally prove that I have taken any money out of the venture, I can be personally liable for the full amount of the lease. Let's do the math. That's $2,200 a month, for 36 months. That's an easy 79 grand. Let's look at that in all it's glory. That's $79,200 USD. Even on top of that is the cost of a T1. That is a paltry $12,600. For the math challenged, that's $91,800. That's waaaay more than I have in the bank. That is more than I have in assets. That basically means that if everyone bails on the venture, I will lose everything that I own, and still be screwed for awhile. For a venture that isn't setup as a profit maker, the amount of risk is gigantic. Were that I was independantly wealthy, we'd be sitting in a nice new building sipping espressos and playing with new servers. As it stands, I am not.

Jean Reno played Vincent in the movie 'Ronin'. He has one of the best lines in the flick. It sums up how I feel at this moment. "Well, everyone's your brother till the rent comes due..." Most of the people that I have talked to about this thing have responded with how cool it would be, how they want to be part of it, etc, but when the rubber meets the road, the two people on the corporate paperwork are on the hook for the total amount left on the lease and the T1 agreement. So, as I swirl the bailey's around my tongue, I try to convince myself that a venture that in theory yields me no profit, requires alot of my time, and could possibly bankrupt me is worthwhile. I don't want to be a major downer, but people are going to have to step up and represent.

I have to make a few more calls in the morning and see what a few people will commit to, before I make my decision. If you want it to happen, and you want to stick with it for 3 years or more, I could use your words of commitment and encouragement.
